Oh No! Almost Out of Earl Grey Tea!
Today is going to be spent cranking out a draft of my ten page Honors Contract paper. So far I've been jotting down ideas and have a vague feeling as to what my thesis will be.
I'm writing this paper on a book called A Bird in the House by Margaret Laurence, who also wrote The Diviners. This book, however, is a collection of short stories which surrounds the life of one little girl as she grows up with a horrible family and strives to become a writer. So, basically it's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man set in Laurence's fictional town of Manawaka which is in Manitoba, Canada.
I've never been happy to have read that God-awful Joyce book until now.
I think the reason I love Laurence's books are because of her little town that she made up and how all of the families are intertwined. In this one, Piquette Tonnere is a character who pops up to befriend the narrator whereas I had only seen her in The Diviners as a vaguely mentioned influence over Jules' life. It's just really cool how Laurence created an entire community from which all of her female protagonists try to escape, although for different reasons (generally) in each novel/short story.
The other great thing is that Margaret Atwood modeled an entire chapter in my textbook after A Bird in the House, so I have outside material to use in my paper. Does it get any better?
I'm just hoping that my professor will be happy with what I have to say and that I won't have to do much revising after she reads the draft. I DO have other papers to write, and all...
